The story of Christmas is all about turning something that seemed impossible into a glorious possibility.
Do you want to know more about the history of Christmas? Read how December 25 came to be Christmas day. But, Christmas became a national holiday in the U.S. in the 19th century.
The question though is how does Christmas turn impossible situations into possibilities?
Since, we say that Jesus is the reason for Christmas, then let’s use one Scripture to help us.
Luke 1 is a good one to consider in this case.
In this biblical story, there are two impossible situations. One has to do with the birth of a baby who would become John the Baptist. And the other deals with the birth of a baby who would become Jesus the Christ.
The two impossible situations in Luke 1
The birth of John as the first impossible situation.
John’s parents were Zechariah and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was Mary’s cousin, and Mary is the one to be Jesus’ Mother.
Zachariah was a priest and in charge of priestly responsibilities in this season. As he goes into the holy place where no one else could enter, Gabriel, an Angel from the Lord, appeared to him. (Luke 1: 11).
The angel tells him that his prayer has been answered. It is obvious that he and his wife, Elizabeth, were praying for a need. They had no child and were advanced in age that they might have even lost hope for getting children.
Now, there is conflict between what the angel is saying to Zechariah and his own reality (age). This is making “having a child” an impossible situation.
The birth of Jesus the Christ as a second impossible situation.
Mary and Joseph are engaged at this point. Remember also that Mary is Elizabeth’s cousin.
One day, Gabriel, the same Angel who had appeared to Zechariah earlier on, would also appear to Mary.
Also, keep in mind that Mary has never been with a man before. But, the message from God, Gabriel gives to Mary, is that she will be of child. And this will happen before she and Joseph are officially married. Clearly, becoming of child will take place before Joseph and Mary are husband and wife.
Of course, Mary asks the angel questions how this will come to pass. (Luke 1: 35-38)
What will help is that the same angel will later appear to Joseph to help him make sense of what was going on. (Matthew 1: 20-25)
This was an impossible situation both for Mary and Joseph.
So, what turned these two impossible situations into glorious possibilities?
They had faith in God.
- Elizabeth and Zechariah prayed to God about their need of having a child on their own. That is why when the angel appears to him, he says: “your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear a son…” (Luke 1: 13). This also shows that both Zechariah and Elizabeth were praying for this. They desired to have a child and had put their faith in God.
- Mary, just like any woman in her days, was hoping to have a child. But, in the story, she was caught by surprise with the message from the angel. After listening to the angel and asking questions, she chose to have faith in God. Here’s what she said: “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1: 38)
Nothing is impossible with God.
- In both stories, there is the angel of the Lord, Gabriel, bringing the good news of what has to come.
- This is what God is capable of doing, and which He will do.
- The angel appeared to Zechariah as well as Mary. He later appeared in a dream to Joseph too.
- This is what the angel tells Mary: “for nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1: 37)
God does what He has to do for His purpose.
- The birth of John was to help people prepare the way of the Lord (Jesus Christ). (Luke 1: 17)
- As of Jesus Christ,
- He is to be the Son of the Most High.
- He will reign over the house of Jacob forever and his Kingdom will have no end.
- He will be holy (Only God is Holy). (Luke 1: 32,33 & 35)
God can do anything because nothing is impossible with Him.
Of course you would ask me:
Why is it that things aren’t the way I wanted them to be? Why this illness? Why is my life this way?
How can all what you experience be also turned into glorious opportunities?
Faith makes all things possible.
“All things are possible to the one who believes.” (Mark 9: 23)
- You’ve got to believe in God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- This is “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11: 1)
- Faith leads you to justification and salvation.
- When you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you will be saved. (Romans 10: 10)
- Also, “everyone who believes in God will not be put to shame.” (Romans 10: 11)
God makes all things possible through our faith.
God “is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” Ephesians 3: 20
- God does the impossible, but which is in relation to the Holy Spirit dwelling in us .
- This power is what we receive as a result of believing. John says that to those who received Him, God gave them the power to become God’s children. (John 1: 12).
- This implies a personal relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ.
- Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit Who helps turn impossible situations into glorious opportunities.
God turns impossible situations into glorious possibilities for His purpose.
- God works all things together for good, for the people who love God and are called. He does all this according to His own purpose. (Romans 8: 28)
- God’s purpose works with two things you’ve got to do:
- Love God.
- Answer God’s calling in your life.
The Christmas story means that what was impossible can become possible in your life. But, it only requires you to do one thing: believe. Have faith, not only in the story, but in God.
-
Believe and confess that Jesus is Lord.
-
Believe and confess that God has a purpose for your life.
-
Believe and confess that God isn’t done with you yet.
You are a piece of this big story about God’s Kingdom. And, all things become possible only when we believe. Christmas reminds us of just that.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and your family!
