Mother’s Day Is Not Just A One-Day Celebration

Mother’s Day should not be a one-day celebration!

And there are two major reasons to justify the fact that Mother’s Day is not a one day-celebration.

First, we honor Mothers because it is God’s commandment.

We should honor Mothers because God wants us to do so. God gave it to Moses for the people of Israel as part of the covenant between God and the Israelites. Exodus 20:12 (English Standard Version) says “Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”

You may wonder if this is applicable to you and I today. Yes, it still applies to you and I. Actually, Paul brings it back in Ephesians 6: 2-3.

So, it is clear therefore that this commandment, which was a part of God’s covenant with the people of Israel, is still applicable to the Church today.

Also, let me point out what happened on the cross with Jesus hanging on it and before He died. According to the Gospel of John, Jesus said these words: “Woman, behold your son… Behold, your mother!” (John 19: 26-27, English Standard Version).

Since we are disciples of Jesus Christ, we should obey Christ Who is our Teacher and Master.

And we do it because we obey God’s commandment.

Second, we honor Mothers because it is the right thing to do!

Both Exodus 20 and Ephesians 6, as described above, talk of the benefit of doing so. Of course, the greatest thing is to obey God’s word.

Also, there is a benefit we personally get when we choose to honor Mothers.

What we experience according to our two scriptures is that everything may go well with us and that we may live long in the land. This is not a quantitative description of the reward of honoring Mothers.

When we honor Mothers, we experience good quality of life as a result!

But, how should we honor Mothers?

[bctt tweet=”To honor Mothers means to praise them for who they are. ” username=””via PasteurEmmanuel””]

Let me say this here. Through Eve, the first woman to be a Mother on earth, was the source of physical and biological life as we know of today.

[bctt tweet=”Every human living today owes his or her life to a Mother! ” username=””via PasteurEmmanuel””]

What this means is every single breath you and I have should be an opportunity to thank God for Mothers.

Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, is the person God used to have God’s Son come into the world. Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are now redeemed and have become children of God. All that was made possible because Mary accepted to keep the baby in her womb for 9 months. She did it in spite of all consequences that could have fallen on her.

That is who a Mother is, and which gives us a reason to praise her!

[bctt tweet=”To honor Mothers means to care for them. ” username=””via PasteurEmmanuel””]

To honor Mothers means to care for them. This is supported by this piece of Scripture: “do not despise your Mother when she is old” (Proverbs 23:22, English Standard Version). No matter what, always be there for your Mother, especially in her old days and when she needs people the most due to health or other life issues.

[bctt tweet=”To honor Mothers means to listen to their teaching.” username=””via PasteurEmmanuel””]

“Do not reject your Mother’s teaching” (Proverbs 1:8, English Standard Version). Of course, one may argue that their Mother has no rational thinking. Or, perhaps your Mother is at the point where she cannot remember much of the past. She may be dealing some other health issues.

That should not be an excuse not to listen to her. Be there and listen. Make sure that she knows you are listening all the time you are with her.

[bctt tweet=”To honor Mothers means never to curse them or the day we were born.” username=””via PasteurEmmanuel””]

“If you curse your father or mother, your lamp will go out in utter darkness” (Proverbs 20:20, English Standard Version).

To honor our Mothers is to show no regret of being alive today.

The point here is anything we do, it goes back to the Creator and the True Source of our existence: GOD.

Jesus said once that everything we do to people, we do it directly to Him (Matthew 25).

So, to honor our Mothers is to honor God who gave you and I to be alive this day! Every little thing you do to your biological Mother or any other Mother, you do it for Jesus Christ!

Therefore, Mother’s Day is a celebration of all Mothers throughout our lives. The life we have in our body and the life we have in Christ are the two gifts God has granted to us through Mothers!
