Steps to a Happier Living – Part Three

There are many suggested steps to a happier living. But, in this series, we have been looking at what the Bible offers us.

Based on Matthew 5, we have been discussing 4 steps to a happier living. And so far, we have talked about step one and step two.

The first step to a happier living is about ‘being poor in spirit.’ This is an attitude to embrace in life and which is characterized by: love, peace, restoration and comfort. Happier living is about loving everyone, pursuing peace with all, encouraging people and making a difference in people’s lives.
The second step to a happier living is that God has put on us the oil of gladness instead of mourning and a garment of praise instead of faint spirit. The truth about us is what represents the source of happiness in life. We get the truth about us not from what we go through, but from God, our Maker.

The third step to a happier living is learning to be humble. Humility does not mean being powerless. [bctt tweet=”Humility means being powerful enough to let God be in control of everything in life. “]

An illustration we find in the Bible about humility is that of being the Clay and God the Potter (Isaiah 64: 8).Clay There are three major benefits that come with we seeing ourselves as the clay:

  1. our imperfections are replaced with God’s perfection.

  2. we stop from worrying about anything else. God takes care of the shape, the value and everything else about the clay.

  3. we are unique, original and special. No one is like us and we are not a copy of anyone else.

What does it mean to live humble in life as a step to a happier living?

To answer the question, we should first point out that the origin of the word “meek” as found in Matthew 5:5 has to do with ‘domestication’ like ‘training a horse or wild animal.’

It means that the idea of being humble is foreign to us all. That is why it is so hard to always get it right.

Because ‘being humble’ isn’t very much a part of us, we have to train ourselves to it.

Two things to do daily:

  1. thank God for the new day; and

  2. ask God:

    1. to help you love Him and the people more than ever;

    2. to help you hear His voice clearly in your daily routines so that you can live according to His plan, and not yours;

    3. for His will to be done throughout the day.
