You can experience real life in Jesus Christ!
The reason why is because Jesus Christ is the Word of Life, according to John. Let’s focus on 1 John 1: 1-4,
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. ESV.
First, look at the following statement (verse one) from the Scripture above,
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life
There is a lot we can learn from the biblical account. But, let me talk about three things for the sake of our article and about the fact that Jesus Christ gives us life.
Jesus Christ is Life made manifest
The underlined prepositions in verse one above are about Jesus Christ.
Being Life, Jesus then is the One who defines the who, which, what, how and why.
- It is Jesus who was from the very beginning.
- It’s Jesus from whom the disciples have heard.
- It’s Jesus the disciples have seen with their eyes and upon which they looked.
- They touched Jesus Christ with their hands.

Jesus Christ is Life Eternal
Jesus Christ was from the very beginning. See verse 1.
Jesus Christ is the Word that would become flesh and dwell among people. John talks about it in his gospel (John 1). The Word gives us eternal life (see verse two).
The Greek word that translates into life in English, also implies what we have now and what we will have in the future.

In other words, Jesus Christ, being God and Eternal, gives us the who, which, what, how and why, which we can only find in Him.
Life Jesus Christ gives us is experiential
As you may have already seen, John is not talking about a story concerning the Christ. He’s writing about a true life experience he had with the Christ.
The life we receive from faith in Jesus Christ allows us to enter into fellowship. We enter into fellowship with Father God as well as other people.
When you look at the Greek word, koinonia (how it reads), used in verse 3, it implies more than just a fellowship. It requires more:
- You share what you have in anything.
- You embody the kind of fellowship you have with others.
- You join and participate.
- You give the best of yourself for the sake of your fellowship.
That’s exactly what Jesus Christ did for us. He lost His own life by dying on the cross so that you and I have abundant life. See John 10: 10.
The life we have from Jesus empowers us to embody what it means to be a child of God. And, we do so because we have experienced Jesus Christ first hand. We do it because we are God’s witnesses.
Life through Jesus Christ gives us meaning and purpose
John, in verse 3, points out that the Word of Life, Jesus Christ, allows us to enter into fellowship with God, the Father, and others so that we have complete joy.
[clickToTweet tweet=”Complete joy in life comes out of finding meaning and purpose. ” quote=”Complete joy in life comes out of finding meaning and purpose. ” theme=”style3″]
Meaning and purpose are the fruit of our intimacy with Jesus Christ. They derive from our fellowship with God, the Father. Fellowship with God the Father means that we experience God and see God’s plan in our lives.
It also means that we are connected to the Vine that is Jesus Christ. And, because we are connected to the Vine, as branches, we will be able to bear the right fruit. See John 15: 1-8.
In summary
Jesus is the Word of Life who allows us to enter into fellowship with God, the Father. Through Him, we find meaning and purpose in life and receive them as gifts from God through faith in Jesus Christ. This fellowship with God, the Father, connects us to the Vine (Jesus Christ). As a result, we can bear the right fruit in this present life, as Jesus Christ ushers us into spending eternity with God, our Father.
